Mounts stop Lancaster Mennonite

Midway through the fourth set Tuesday night, the match was at a bit of a crossroads.

Ephrata had taken the first two sets from host Lancaster Mennonite but the Blazers rebounded to win the third.

The Mounts led 16-14 in the fourth but as most of the match proved, a two-point lead didn't add up to much.

This time, though, the Mounts took the two-point lead and built on it, first, with two of Nick Farlow's match-high 29 kills.

Soon, the lead was 21-14 and that was enough of a surge to send Ephrata to the 25-18 fourth-set win and a 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 16-25, 25-18) victory in the match, the first Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two match for both schools.

Mounts handle Hempfield

Having grown up with many of them, Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish knows Hempfield’s hitters.

“They’re pretty good,” he said.

Ephrata’s senior right-hander knows something else.

“If you make pitches,” he said, “you can get anyone out.”

Fogarty-Harnish made his pitches Tuesday, going the full six innings in a 14-2 win over the Section One champions and defending league champs in an L-L semifinal at sunny but windy War Memorial Field in Ephrata.

Lady Mounts win Section Title

They gathered in the shadow of the grandstands Monday afternoon, Ephrata parents and coaches, throwers, runners and jumpers, as the sun sank and Kay Liebl set the school’s pole vault record higher and higher.

As the Mountaineer junior shot over the bar at 9-feet, 5-inches, the howls rained down from the back of the bleachers and cheers swept across the adjacent hill filled with purple-clad supporters.

Liebl’s pole vaulting punctuated Ephrata’s 92-58 win over visiting Cocalico, an undefeated dual-meet season and Ephrata’s fourth straight Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two title.
