Braves topple Mounts

Pequea Valley scored on their first three possessions and coasted to a 42-7 [box score] win over Ephrata on Friday night at War Memorial Field.

The Braves (2-3 Section Three, 4-4 overall) took advantage of four Ephrata (0-4, 0-8) turnovers, converting three of them into 21 points.

Turning point: On the first play of the game, PV running back Hunter Smith scampered 65 yards to the Ephrata 14. Two plays later, QB Gabe Allgyer (or was it Jordan Lapp? who can tell with Pequea's hideous color combination of silver numbers on white jerseys) scored on a 9-yard run. Ephrata fumbled the ensuing kick and five plays later, the Braves went up up 14-0 on a 20-yard TD pass from Jordan Lapp to Chad Mullen.

"You go through game-planning all week and you try to put your one or two best plays in your first two plays of the game," said PV coach Mike Choi. "We put it in the hands of one of our best players, Hunter Smith. You can see his talent. That play was great to set the tone for the rest of the game."

Star of the game: Pequea Valley quarterback Gabe Allgyer ran for 57 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the opening quarter as the Braves jumped out to a 21-0 lead.

Key statistic: The Braves had 312 yards of total offense in the first half, compared to just 46 for the Mounts. PV finished with 273 yards rushing on 39 carries, while Ephrata was limited to 46 yards on 20 carries.

Quotable: "There is no taking any team lightly," said Choi. "We don't have the luxury of taking teams lightly. We have to come in and we have to focus. I wanted to make sure our kids came out and focused early."

"I thought we threw the ball pretty well," said Ephrata coach Scott Shelley. "The kids are starting to understand to run the ball hard and the line continues to work and get better. We're going to continue to work hard and get there."
