Mounts fall in opener

Exeter Eagle senior quarterback Kyle Yocum (4-4 72 yards 3 TD) accounted for five touchdowns and Exeter's defense held Ephrata to just 78 total yards to rout Ephrata 42-0 [boxscore] in a non-league victory at Don Thomas Stadium Friday. Scott Liebl picked up 64 of those 78 yards on the ground for the Mounts, carrying the ball 15 times.

Exeter senior wide receiver Darion Einsig returned the opening kickoff 51 yards to set up the Eagles' first possession. Eight plays later, he finished the drive with a 7-yard run to give Exeter a 7-0 lead.

Ephrata fumbled the ball on its first offensive play and Exeter linebacker James Moran recovered to give Exeter optimal field position. Yocum (6 rushes, 42 yards) capitalized from 18 yards out to extend the lead to 14-0.

Exeter forced Ephrata to punt deep inside its own territory and benefited from a friendly bounce that set the Eagles up at the Mounts' 14-yard line. Eight seconds later, Yocum hit a wide-open Robbie Devich (2 catches, 49 yards) to make it 21-0.

Senior defensive back Brian Beissel picked off the first of three errant Ephrata passes. Devich made a tumbling, 35-yard touchdown reception to make it 28-0 only a minute into the 2nd quarter. Exeter would make it 42-0 by halftime, enacting the mercy rule.
