Solanco drops Mounts into Tie
- 25 September 2008
Kate Miller's second goal of the game proved to be the winner as Solanco upended first-place Ephrata 3-2 in a Section Two field hockey game Wednesday in Quarryville.
The Golden Mares' win over Mountaineers, combined with Cocalico's 1-0 shutout of Garden Spot and Lampeter-Strasburg's 3-0 triumph over Lebanon means there is now a three-way tie for first in the standings.
The Eagles, Mounts and Pioneers all stand at 5-3 in league play with four regular-season games left for those three squads.
Manheim Central (4-2), which will host Solanco in a makeup game at 10 a.m. Saturday, is a game off the pace, but the Barons have six left to play.
The top three finishers earn berths in the L-L League playoff quarterfinals, which will consist of doubleheaders at 10 and 11:30 a.m. Oct. 11 at Penn Manor and Pequea Valley. The semifinal doubleheader is set for 6 and 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 16 at Manheim Township with the title game at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at Manheim Central.
Emily Beamesderfer put Ephrata on top 1-0, before Miller scored her first goal to tie the game at halftime.
Sheena Hanley put the Mares in front 2-1 at the 8:21 mark of the second half, before Beamesderfer tied it nine minutes later.
Miller then scored the game-winner 6:57 left in the game.
Donegal (8-0) and Lancaster Mennonite (6-1) currently hold the two league playoff berths from Section Three. Penn Manor (8-0), Warwick (7-1) and Hempfield (5-2-1) are in line for the three berths from Section One, although Conestoga Valley (4-3-1) is just off the pace.
