Indoor Track team finishes season

ImageThe Ephrata High School indoor track & field team ended the season this pas Saturday, February 10th competing in the PTFCA Indoor Track Carnival at Lehigh University.

The final meet of the year drew 120 teams from across the state. Only one competitior per team was permitted to participate in each event.

The season ending meet provided some thrilling results for the EHS team. Three indoor school records went down and several athletes ran to their best times of the year. Leading the Mounts team were seniors Alicia Harbold and Cordell Oberholtzer in the 1 mile run. Both ran their best races of the season, Harbold finishing in a season best 5:33.4 (10th place) and Oberholtzer crossing the line in an indoor school record time of 4:44.32 (13th place). There were over 40 participants in each race.

"Both athletes will be sorely missed," said Ephrata Coach John Keller of Harbold and Oberholtzer. "You may find more talented kids out there, but their work ethic and attitudes are second to none. They both have contributed so much to the distance program at Ephrata."

Senior CJ Wilson, competing in his last indoor meet, finished in sixth place in the high jump with a leap of six feet, his best effort of the indoor season. Wilson also led the boys 4 x 200 meter relay team to an indoor school record time of 1:40.84. Alex Bippus, Jordan Yarbrough and Oberholtzer teamed with Wilson in the event.

Bippus also participated in the 60 meter hurdles and broke his own indoor record in the event, crossing the line in 9.46 seconds. Sophomore Yarbrough ran his best 200 meters of the season, recovering from an early season foot injury. Yarbrough hit the tape in 25.01 seconds, good enough for an indoor school record. Junior Callie Sweigart had her best showing of the season in the shot put, Sweigart's put of 30 feet 3.5 inches placed her in the top 20 of the crowded event.

"From here it's on to the outdoor season" said Keller. "This gives the athletes the opportunity to stay in shape and compete during the winter months and hopefully generate enthusiasm for the spring."

The indoor track & field team along with Coach Keller, would like to thank the volunteer coaches who gave of their time this season. Along with that, a thanks goes out to the booster club who supports all 3 programs at Ephrata, cross country, winter track and spring track. Your hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated.
