Strohm Leads Mounts Over Cedars

ImageKat Strohm defeated Shannon Leahy 6-0, 6-1 then teamed up with Greta Stemplinger, for a doubles match and won 7-5, 6-3 for the decisive fourth point as the Ephrata Mounts Tennis team turned back Lebanon 4-3.

The marathon 2 1/2 hour doubles match sealed the victory for the Mounts who came out of singles play with a slight 3-2 lead.

Stemplinger, returning from an injury that caused her to miss most of the preseason practice, narrowly lost her singles match to Anna Haitos 2-6, 7-6, 9-11. The final match extending to two super-tiebreak points.

The Mountaineer lineup has a new look this year starting with the coach, as Cheryl Fritz returns after an eight year hiatus to guide the Lady Mounts. Fritz who coached 13 years prior at Ephrata (1985-97) amassed over 100 victories in her previous tenure. The Mounts also have a new look on the court after graduating 4 seniors that played the majority of the matches over the last two years.

Lindsay Miller, Stemplinger, Liya Palagashvili, Strohm, and Lia Denlinger currently make up the top five flights.

Last night the Mounts had a tougher time with Garden Spot as the Spartans won 6-1. Palagashvili took a one set lead over Steph Fisher with a 6-1 first set, but dropped the next two 4-6, and 9-11 in a tight match at Flight 3.

Denlinger remained undeafted in Flight 5 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Lindsey Riehl.

The JV Tennis team showed their depth as they recorded two victories, defeating Lebanon 7-0, and Garden Spot 8-4.

The Lady Mounts play Thursday August 31st at Lampeter-Strasburg with the first match scheduled to begin play at 4:00.
