Mounts outlast Pioneers; face E-town

ImageEphrata's high powered offense shifted to a grind-it-out method to secure a win.

Brandon Pike and Tim Wanner each had a pair of goals to push Ephrata past Lampeter-Strasburg 5-2 (box score).

As a result, Ephrata will meet E-town in round two of the Lancaster/Lebanon/Berks South Division playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Monday (February 27th) at the Lancaster Ice Rink (directions).

The Mounts, the top seeds in the LLB South, were challenged early by the fourth-seeded Pioneers, who took a 1-0 lead on Russell Hauser's nearly rink-long rush midway through the first period. L-S kept that 1-0 lead, thanks to two big saves from goalie Matt Loss near the end of the period.

But Ephrata struck for two goals just 41 seconds apart early in the second. Jeff Bohler Jr. scored on a shot from the point on the power play. Then Pike got his own rebound and scored.

"The morale on the bench changed after that,'' said Ephrata coach Keith Allen. "We realized we had to move Loss around to score on him.''

Charlie Latanzio knotted the game at 2-2, somehow slipping the puck past Ephrata goalie Devon Williams from behind the goal line. Pike broke the tie with 1:11 to play in the second and Wanner added a pair of third-period goals.

Ephrata outshot L-S 42-12 in the game.

"We wanted to slow then down,'' said L-S coach Bob Hauser. "We played our hearts out in the first two periods and that's all we can ask.''
