Lady Mounts Playoff hopes dashed

ImageThe Mounts had their playoff hopes ended Tuesday at Garden Spot, as the Spartans stole a 55-53 overtime victory.

Brynn Lyons capped off a furious comeback in regulation, connecting on a three-pointer with two seconds left to force the extra session.  The Mounts trailed 43-33 with 1:26 left in the game, and found a way to pour in 13 points in the final 86 seconds to extend the game.  She opened the OT with another three to keep things rolling.  With the score 50-50 and a minute left, an out-of-bounds call went against Ephrata, and GS converted on the other end to take a 52-50 lead with 30 seconds left.  Lyons hit her fourth three-pointer of the game with 19 seconds left, putting Ephrata back on top, but Garden Spot made a three with seven seconds left and hung on for the win.

Marcy Dull scored 18 points and added 19 rebounds, but was denied several trips to the free throw line.  Lyons had 14, and Arielle Gordon added 9, all in the fourth quarter.

Gordon's three started the game-ending run, cutting the margin to 43-36.  The Spartans made a free throw, but Aly Goodman answered with her first-ever varsity basket, a three-pointer, to make it 44-39.  After a GS miss, Gordon scored on a baseline drive to cut it to 44-41.  Dull then stole the ball at midcourt and Gordon was fouled in the scramble.  Her free throws made it 44-43 with 23 seconds left.  The Spartans made two more foul shots with 14 seconds left before Lyons hit the big three just before the horn.  It was the second time this year Lyons forced overtime with a buzzer-beating three-point shot.

Ephrata is now 6-8 in the section and 7-13 overall.  They play their final home game on Friday against Solanco, as seniors Dull, Jessi Alexander, and Carrie Hall will be honored.  The league schedule ends next Tuesday at Elizabethtown, where Ephrata will have a chance to play spoiler.  The team's final game will be next Thursday at Pequea Valley.

Last Friday, the Lady Mounts hosted the Buckskins of Conestoga Valley.

Conestoga Valley is the defending Section Two champion in girls' basketball, but Ephrata has their number.  The Lady Mounts beat CV for the second time this year, this time defending the home court in a 55-52 thriller.

Marcy Dull led the way with 17 points and 19 rebounds.  Arielle Gordon added 11 points and 7 assists.

Up 32-21 in the middle of the third, Gordon hit a big three-pointer to boost the Ephrata lead to four.  CV came back to take a two-point lead, but Gordon answered with two more baskets.  CV tied the game at 41 late in the quarter, but Dull beat the buzzer with a three-pointer that gave Ephrata the lead after three periods.

After CV took it's last lead at 45-44, Dull scored in the lane to put Ephrata back in front.  A huge three from Brynn Lyons and a clutch jumper from Christine Weaver helped keep Ephrata in front.  With Ephrata on top 53-52 with 30 seconds left, Gordon connected on both ends of a one-and-one to boost the lead to three.  CV missed a pair of game-tying threes in the final ten seconds.

Lyons added 10 points for Ephrata, while Nicole Martin had 9 points and 12 boards as well.
