Mounts battle to 5-5 tie with Muhlenberg

ImageJust put two perennial CPIHL powers on a sheet of ice at the same time and what do you get? A great hockey game.

Last Wednesday night that was the case as the 10-1 Ephrata Mounts faced off against the 10-1-1 Muhlenberg Muhls.

Both teams came looking for a fight, trying to stay on top of their respective divisions. The Mounts had not been tested since their December 9th game against Cocalico and the concern was, would they be ready for this?

That question was answered early, they were not, as the Muhls jumped on Ephrata for three goals, all within a minute of each other, just three minutes into the contest.

But Ephrata did not fold as captain Brandon Pike (35 goals, 22 Assists on the season) scored off a pass from Joey Accardo and Jeremy Martin. Then Pike scored again off a nice pass from Shane Allen (30 goals, 22 Assists on the season) with 36 seconds left in the first period.

In the second period, both teams went at each other, trying to take control. But with all the shots taken, the teams were only able to exchange goals as the Muhls' Jonathan Swavely, who leads all divisions in scoring, added his second and the Mounts' Pike, who now trails Swavely by just two points, scored his third. At the end of the second period the score was 4-3 favor of the Muhls.

In the third the battle continued when three minutes in, Ephrata's Allen scored off a feed from Pike and Chris Lyons to tie the game at 4-4. Just one minute later Pike scored his fourth goal, this time from Allen to take the lead for the first time in the game.

But the Muhls did not go quietly either, as they scored with 9:44 to tie the game again. From that point on both teams took their shots, but both goalies decided enough was enough and the battle ended in a 5-5 tie. Click here for the complete boxscore.
