Lady Mounts stop Eagles

Ephrata’s girls basketball team remained unscathed Thursday night.

But the Mountaineers had to scratch and claw to improve to 6-0.

Jasmine Griffin scored 17 points, Ephrata forced 16 turnovers and the Mounts fended off backyard rival Cocalico 32-19 in a non-league clash in Denver.

Mount stop Donegal

Up 18 points in the second quarter, Ephrata saw that lead dwindle to three with just 65 seconds left Wednesday night. Still, the host Mountaineers eventually held on for a hard-fought 48-43 non-league boys basketball win over visiting Donegal.

In doing so, the Mountaineers (5-0) remained the Lancaster-Lebanon League’s lone unbeaten squad to this point, while the Indians (4-4) have lost their four games by an average margin of just 3.5 points.

Mounts sweep Warwick

Ephrata finished up its December schedule with a nonleague swimming sweep of Warwick on Tuesday afternoon. The Mounts won the boys contest 107-57 and the girls event 113-52.

“We can put people into a lot of different races, not necessarily their best races, but they’ll still race hard,” Ephrata head coach Mickey Molchany said.

There are multiple ways for these cliches to be proven and Thursday afternoon’s nonleague swim meet between Manheim Township and Ephrata at Ephrata Rec Center illustrated them in different ways.

First, the Mountaineer girls tied the Blue Streaks 8585, showing how any slight difference in any race would have changed that result.

Second, the Manheim Township boys defeated Ephrata 93-77 by accumulating several second- and third-place finishes. The Mounts won seven of the 11 events, but the Blue Streaks had seven second-place finishes and 10 third-place finishes to add to their team score.
