Mounts hold off Braves

ATGLEN — Octorara tried to play the spoiler Friday night. But in the end, Ephrata took care of its business.

Now the Mounts will wait anxiously over the next day or two to see if it was enough.

The Mounts entered Friday’s Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Three contest at Octorara needing a win to stay alive for a District Three Class 5A playoff berth. Ephrata, ranked 15th in 5A — the top 14 teams qualify — hasn’t qualified for districts since 1987, but the Mounts put themselves in contention with a big second-half effort that yielded a 35-14 [boxscore] victory over the Braves.

Mounts Blast Braves

Led by senior quarterback Caden Keefer, Ephrata’s spread offense racked up 284 yards on the ground Friday night. Consequently, the Mounts rang up a third straight victory, 56-0 [boxscore] over visiting Pequea Valley in Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Three action.

X’s and O’s: During a tight Week Eight win over Lebanon, Keefer surpassed Jeremy Franck as Ephrata’s all-time leading passer, and entered Week Nine just 17 yards shy of 3,000 career passing yards.

Lady Mounts Make History

It’s a championship 18 years in the making.

Senior midfielder Abbie Wiest, who wasn’t even born the last time the Ephrata girls soccer team played for a Lancaster- Lebanon League championship, knocked in the only goal of the match.

A goal that secured the first girls soccer title in school history, 1-0 over Manheim Central Thursday night at Warwick.

Mounts advance to Finals

Ephrata coach Wes Deininger said that Tuesday evening’s Lancaster- Lebanon League girls soccer semifinal had the feel of a late district or a state game.

It was an observation that was hard to argue.

The Mountaineers battled Conestoga Valley through 75 scoreless minutes before Annie Slovak found an opening in the defensive blanket that had covered her.
