Mounting Another Charge


The Ephrata girls' track team is once again proving the axiom that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
But the Mountaineers do have some really good parts.
 
Led by four wins from junior Kelly Liebl, the two-time defending section champion Mounts (3-0 L-L) took down host Garden Spot (2-1) by a 95 1/2-54 1/2 margin Wednesday in a Section Two dual meet with title implications.
 
On the boys' side, the reigning section champ Spartans (3-0) got three wins from Malik Parsons en route to an 85-64 triumph over the Mounts (0-3).

Tornado outlast Mounts


Facing the same situation, McCaskey coach Brian McCloud and Ephrata coach Mike Garman would likely tell you the same thing.
 
When it comes to coaching a young girls' basketball team, the thing that makes it exhilarating is, at times, the same thing that makes it exhausting.
 
"They're fun to coach," McCloud said of a Red Tornado roster littered with underclassmen. "But they can also give you a heart attack. You've just got to understand they're young and they make young-people mistakes."

Eagles top Mounts


Two teams, the last game of the regular season and both with something on the horizon.
 
For one, Cocalico, the horizon is next week and the opening round of the District Three Class AAA playoffs. For Ephrata, the horizon is more distant. It's next season, one that may take it to a new section.
 
Cocalico rolled up 48 first-half points, putting the mercy rule in effect in the second half, en route to a 48-7 [box score] victory over Ephrata on Friday night in Denver.
