Mounts team up to top Garden Spot

With her blazing time of 25.3 seconds, Ephrata’s Jianna Long had already sealed a PR in the 200-meter dash as the Mountaineers hosted Garden Spot in a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two track and field meet on Monday.

However, Long’s day wasn’t done.

She was called upon again to anchor the final running event, the 1,600 relay, much to her surprise.

Solanco Outlasts Ephrata

It was a make-or-break moment in a game yearning for a conclusion.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning of a 5-5 tie, Ephrata’s Ali Williams doubled to the gap in right field, bringing Ellie Meier to the plate. Solanco head coach Brett Miller waved Meier to first with an intentional walk in a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two softball game.

Mighty bold strategy, walking a batter who was hitless in three at-bats, to pitch to a batter, Maddie Russell, who had hit three balls out of the park off Golden Mules pitcher Anna Sexton — two of them fair.

Cocalico Stops Mountaineers

In the moments immediately after last Thursday’s double-digit loss to Lampeter- Strasburg, the Cocalico girls lacrosse varsity players and seventh-year coach Courtney Reinhold sat in a circle on the sidelines and had a long conversation.

“We really just talked about playing as a team,” Eagles senior defender Megan McLaughlin recalled. “Getting out on the field and having a positive mindset, not letting the last game carry into the next one.”

Playing for the first time since that discussion, Cocalico responded with a 15-7 Lancaster-Lebanon League win over rival Ephrata in chilly conditions at Talon Field on Monday night.

Warriors top Mounts

After a pair of upset wins in the District Three Class 6A softball tournament, Ephrata had hopes of keeping its Cinderella story alive Tuesday as it faced topseeded Warwick in the semifinal round. It the end, though, Warwick topped the Mounts 10-1 in Lititz — but the game felt tighter than the score line showed.

The Warriors (17-3) opened the scoring in the bottom half of the third inning after center fielder Emily Beale, who bunted her way onto first base. Beale advanced on a double by senior pitcher Katelyn “Lefty” Minney.
