Falcons run past Mounts

The only thing stopping the Cedar Crest onslaught Friday night was a temporary delay at the start of the second half to escort a laser-pointing fan off the premises.

The Falcons’ laser-like rushing attack, however, could not be stopped.

Cedar Crest (4-0) used a 21-point second-quarter explosion to soar past Ephrata 41-7 [boxscore] in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two opener for both teams.

A balanced Falcons attack moved the ball up and down the field, piling up 22 first downs. Kendell Shand got the party started with a 59-yard punt return that set up a 7-yard rushing touchdown.

Neisso Dorvil chipped in next with a 3-yard touchdown run, plowing over three Ephrata defenders on his way into the end zone.

Junior quarterback Logan Horn then went to the air, striking for touchdown passes of 20 yards to Brandon Showers and then 13 yards to Brody Dunlop.

Turning point: The term missed opportunity has undoubtedly become a hackneyed expression for an Ephrata football team that has not won a game in more than four years, but yet again it was miscues in big moments that led to the Mounts (0-4) falling behind early.

Twice in the first quarter, Ephrata moved the ball into Cedar Crest territory, but both times failed to convert on fourth-and-inches. On the first attempt, it appeared that running back Adam Smith had enough yards, but the spot brought him up just short. Later in the quarter, with the deficit only 7-0, a fumbled snap exchange doomed Ephrata’s chance to tie the game.

Key statistic: Thirteen different Falcons ran the ball, combining for a total of 302 yards on 47 attempts.

Star of the game: The Cedar Crest offensive line dominated all night, bullying the Ephrata defensive front. It did not matter which Falcon was carrying the ball, because the line paved the way for them to get to the second level of the Mounts’ defense all night.
